One thing 2020 has taught each and every one of us is the importance of our health and well-being. With the ongoing global pandemic, preventative health has never been more important. The last thing you want to come into 2021 is health problems. As we look to the new year, it’s time to reflect on how you can stay on top of your preventative health.

First, you need to identify what preventative health entails.

Preventative health care is care that is designed to keep you from becoming sick or developing critical health issues. These health care services typically include screenings, counseling, tests, and immunizations.

Physical Exam

Start by scheduling your physical exam. Your preventative health exam includes a full medical history and family history to understand any previous health conditions or medications.

During this exam, the doctor will check your height, weight, nutrition, and exercise regimen. From there, your doctor will order any lab work, tests, or other preventative treatments. In order to limit your risk factors, schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor as soon as possible.

Screenings

During a screening, your doctor will check your heart, lungs, and blood pressure. He/ she will run basic blood tests to check for any preexisting conditions that may lead to early signs of disease. These screenings can also include osteoporosis screenings, colorectal cancer screenings, mammograms, pap smears, and/ or prostate exams.

Vaccinations

While most vaccinations occur when you are younger, there are a few adult booster shots that you may need. As a part of your preventative care, it is important to stay up to date with any vaccinations that you may need. Immunizations can be some of the best ways to keep you healthy and safe.

Why is preventative care so important?

Preventative care saves patients time and money on disease treatments. Regular exams and check-ups help your doctor monitor your health over time, which makes it easier to detect the early stages of disease. Most health insurance plans include some aspect of covered preventive care.

Preventative care helps you plan for your health future and reach your health goals. As we come to the new year, it’s time to schedule your preventative care appointments!
